Wonder Woman 3, update

As most of you know, DC Universe fans were rocked by some pretty major revelations yesterday. James Gunn and Peter Safran have been shaping the next stage of the franchise, but not every previously-announced project is safe. One of those projects is Wonder Woman 3, which is said to no longer be moving forward as it’s “considered dead in its current incarnation.” According to Deadline, Jenkins reportedly had the opportunity to do another pass on the Wonder Woman sequel but decided to walk instead.

Patty Jenkins and Geoff Johns had recently submitted their treatment for Wonder Woman 3. James Gunn, Peter Safran, and Warner Bros. Pictures co-chairs and co-CEOS Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy then told Jenkins that it didn’t “fit in with the new (but still unfolding) plans” for the new DC Universe. Deadline’s report states that the sequel script “had character arc problems which rivaled that of Wonder Woman 1984,” which doesn’t exactly inspire confidence. Gunn, Safran, De Luca, and Abdy raised their concerns, but Patty Jenkins “fought back and defended her vision that the threequel’s character arcs were solid.” The director wound up walking away from the project instead of redeveloping it.

It’s not clear if Gal Gadot would want to make another Wonder Woman sequel without Patty Jenkins, but the actress recently tweeted how grateful she was to be able to play the character. “A few years ago it was announced that I was going to play Wonder Woman,” Gadot wrote. “I’ve been so grateful for the opportunity to play such an incredible, iconic character and more than anything I’m grateful for YOU.The fans. Can’t wait to share her next chapter with you.” James Gunn has also addressed yesterday’s report, saying that “some of it is true, some of it is half-true, some of it is not true, & some of it we haven’t decided yet whether it’s true or not.” So, what’s the moral of the story? Nothing is set in stone, and we really won’t know what the plan for the new DC Universe is until Gunn and Safran officially unveil it.
