Kathryn Bigelow is finally ready to tackle her first project in five years as THR has reported that she’s set to helm a new thriller for Netflix.
The project, titled Aurora, is based on the upcoming book by David Koepp, best known for Jurassic Park, Mission: Impossible, Spider-Man and more. Aurora follows the events of “a solar storm that knocks out most of humanity’s power grids and focuses on the personal story of a divorced mother who must now do everything she can to protect her teenaged and her estranged brother, a wealthy Silicon Valley CEO who has built a luxurious bunker in the desert for just such a disaster.” David Koepp will write the screenplay for Aurora, adapting his own book. THR says that this will likely be Kathryn Bigelow’s next project and that it’s shaping up to be quite big as sources have told them that the budget will be well over $100 million.
Kathryn Bigelow’s last film was Detroit, a drama set during the 1967 Detroit riots in which a group of rogue police officers respond to a complaint with retribution rather than justice on their minds. The film starred John Boyega, Anthony Mackie, Will Poulter, Jason Mitchell, and more. Kathryn Bigelow is only the latest in a long line of filmmakers to join Netflix and she certainly won’t be the last if the streaming service continues to throw money at directors to do pretty much whatever they want.
David Koepp’s Aurora will be released by HarperCollins on June 7th.
