Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves may hit a wider audience than just the dweebs, with initial reviews saying it has crossover appeal.

Honor Among Thieves reviews

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves premiered on Friday at SXSW and the early reviews are praising the characters, creatures, action, and even humor. Notably, some of the reviews are even saying that Honor Among Thieves might not just be for fans of the roleplaying game, but has potential to crossover to even those who have never pulled an all-nighter in a dingy, Mountain Dew-soaked basement.

Check out some of the reactions below:

Other praise likened it to some of the more beloved Marvel Cinematic Universe properties, in addition to it tapping into some sheer chaos that can keep viewers engaged for its 134-minute runtime:

Although the roleplaying game itself has a niche (albeit large) following, it’s nice to see that Honor Among Thieves reviews are pointing to its potential mass appeal. Based on the early reactions, hopefully the property name won’t keep the skeptical away.

Dungeons & Dragons of course has a massive fanbase – including some celebrities. Actor Joe Manganiello might be the biggest out there, hosting campaigns that reportedly include the likes of actor Vince Vaughn, pro wrestler The Big Show and Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello. Manganiello was on board a Dungeons & Dragons movie as early as 2017, although Honor Among Thieves took the concept in a different direction. Manganiello is actually co-directing an upcoming documentary on the game, saying, “I lived through the rise and fall and rise again of this legacy brand that has not only meant so much to me but has served as the fountainhead of creativity for an entire generation of writers, artists and creative minds, influencing so much of our culture.”

The official plot, as per Paramount: “A charming thief and a band of unlikely adventurers undertake an epic heist to retrieve a lost relic, but things go dangerously awry when they run afoul of the wrong people. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves brings the rich world and playful spirit of the legendary roleplaying game to the big screen in a hilarious and action-packed adventure.” The stacked cast includes Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Sophia Lillis, and Hugh Grant. It is co-written and co-directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, who played a little D&D on Freaks and Geeks.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves comes to theaters on March 31st.
