Blue Beetle star Xolo Maridueña says that he’s down for a sequel, but that all comes down to how well the DC movie performs.

Blue Beetle, sequel

It remains to be seen whether Blue Beetle will have a place in the new DC Universe, but star Xolo Maridueña is already prepared to return for a sequel.

While speaking with Empire, Xolo Maridueña said that Blue Beetle may not simply be a leftover of the DCEU, but that all depends on how the movie performs. “If we get one movie or a trilogy and fucking fold this into the Justice League shit, we’re ready for the whole nine,” Maridueña said. “For me and Angel [Manuel Soto, director] and the team, we kicked ass with this movie. It just depends on numbers.

It’s hard to tell if Blue Beetle will strike enough of a chord with audiences to warrant a sequel, but it is making history by bringing a major Latino hero to the big-screen. “The goal was to create a movie for a young me and a young Angel that said, ‘Hey, man, someone who looks like you or comes from a similar background can be a superhero,’” Xolo Maridueña said. “The second thing was to open more doors for people like us. As fun as it is to get into this superhero world where everything is [dialled up to] 110 per cent, [it’s] the characters… that I’ve [most] related to.

Recent college grad Jaime Reyes returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it,” reads the official Blue Beetle synopsis. “As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab. When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Super Hero BLUE BEETLE.

In addition to Xolo Maridueña, the Blue Beetle movie also stars George Lopez (Beverly Hills Chihuahua), Adriana Barraza (Rambo: Last Blood), Elpidia Carrillo (Predator), Damián Alcázar (Miss Bala), Belissa Escobedo (American Horror Stories), Bruna Marquezine (God Save the King), Harvey Guillén (What We Do in the Shadows), and Raoul Max Trujillo (Mayans M.C.). Susan Sarandon (Monarch) also stars as Victoria Kord, the main villain of the film. It was also announced this morning that Becky G would be providing the voice of Khaji-Da, “the being that imbues and controls the Scarab attached to Jaime’s back.Blue Beetle will hit theaters on August 18, 2023.
