Barbie is currently set to outperform Oppenheimer in its opening weekend box office.

It has been a well-known fact in the film community that two big movies are coming out on the same day this summer: Barbie, the fantasy comedy directed by Greta Gerwig, and Oppenheimer, the historical thriller directed by Christopher Nolan, are both coming out on July 21, 2023. Fans have been joking about which one they will have to see first.

According to early box office projections from Puck (via World of Reel), Barbie is projected to earn $45-55 million in its opening weekend, which is more than Oppenheimer’s projected $30-35 million. Both films have budgets of $100 million. Barbie’s higher opening was to be expected, as it has a PG-13 rating, leaving it open to a wider audience than the R-rated Oppenheimer.

Early word-of-mouth and critical response will also serve as factors in how these two polar opposite films perform at the box office.

Who is in the Barbie movie cast?

The Barbie movie cast is quite stacked. It includes Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Alexandra Shipp, Emma Mackey, Dua Lipa, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Simu Liu, John Cena, America Ferrera, Michael Cera, Will Ferrell, Helen Mirren, and so many more.

The Barbie release date is July 21, 2023, by Warner Bros. Pictures.
