The first official Young Love clip has been released, which previews the upcoming Max series based on the Oscar-winning short film Hair Love.

Young Love stars Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi and Issa Rae, who will reprise her role from the original short film. Loretta Devine, Tamar Braxton, Brooke Conaway and Harry Lennix also star.

According to Cherry, the series will be set in Chicago, and follow “the Young-Love family, parents Stephen Love & Angela Young, daughter Zuri & their pet cat Rocky as they juggle their careers, marriage, parenthood, social issues & multi-generational dynamics while trying to make a better life for themselves.”

What do we know about Young Love?

The series will be based on Matthew A. Cherry’s 2019 short film Hair Love. The short detailed a father (played by Cherry) attempting to style his daughter’s hair for the first time using instructions from his wife. Currently, no release information on Young Love is available; however, Max states that it is coming soon.

The short film was originally produced following a Kickstarter campaign in 2017, and went on to receive massive acclaim, including winning Best Animated Short Film at the 92nd Academy Awards. A spin-off series was later ordered by Max.

Young Love hails from Cherry and Carl Jones, who will both serve as showrunners. It will be executive produced by the film’s producer Blue Key Entertainment’s Monica A. Young along with Lion Forge Animation’s David Steward II and Carl Reed.
