It’s been a decade since the release of Riddick, but at long last, it seems that the long-awaited sequel is finally moving forward. Deadline has reported that Vin Diesel and David Twohy will be reuniting for Riddick: Furya, which will dive into the origin of Diesel’s character.

Riddick: Furya will follow Riddick as he “finally returns to his home world of Furya, a place he barely remembers and one he fears might be left in ruins by the Necromongers. But there he finds other Furyans fighting for their existence against a new enemy. And some of these Furyans are more like Riddick than he could have ever imagined.” David Twohy will direct the Riddick sequel from his own script, with Vin Diesel obviously returning to play Riddick once more.

Our legion fans have demanded it for years, and now we’re finally ready to honor their call-to-action with Riddick: Furya,” David Twhoy said in a statement to Deadline. “My collaboration with Vin and One Race has spanned 20 fruitful years, as together we’ve created three movies, two video games, an anime production, and motion comics for the internet. This new big-screen event will see a return to Riddick’s homeworld, where we finally get to explore Riddick’s genesis.

Vin Diesel has kept the dream of a Riddick sequel alive all these years and recently posted some concept art from the project. While the Fast & Furious franchise is clearly the biggest feather in Vin Diesel’s cap, I’ve always had a soft spot for Riddick. The actor first played the character in Pitch Black, before returning with The Chronicles of Riddick. The sequel wasn’t exactly a critical or commercial success and brought the franchise to a grinding halt, but Diesel wasn’t about to let Riddick die. Close to ten years later, he was able to bring the character back once again for Riddick. Although this news is a promising development, I’ve learned to keep my expectations in check, so I won’t get too excited until they actually start filming the damn thing.

Vin Diesel has two major films coming up, including Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 on May 5th and Fast X on May 19th. Beyond a return to Furya, what are you hoping to see in the new Riddick sequel?
