Talk to Me directors Danny and Michael Philippou wouldn’t be able to resist if given the chance to make a sequel to their debut film
A24 gave the Australian horror film Talk to Me (read our review at THIS LINK, watch our interview with the directors in the embed above) a theatrical release this past weekend – and while the movie was expected to draw in around 4 to 5 million, it actually exceeded expectations and had an opening weekend of $10 million. That’s very good for a movie that reportedly had a budget of $4.5 million, and could be the first step on the path to a sequel. During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, directors Danny and Michael Philippou, who have a following of over 6 million subscribers on their YouTube channel RackaRacka, said they wouldn’t be able to resist making a sequel if they are given the opportunity.
While discussing the end of the film, Danny said, “Part of me is like, ‘Yeah, maybe it is done.’ The other part of me is like, ‘Oh, my God. Give me a sequel, please.’ I’ve got these set pieces that I’m like, ‘Oh, my God, I so badly want to shoot this. This is the coolest thing ever.’ So, if A24 came to me and said, ‘You know what? We’d like a sequel.’ I wouldn’t be able to resist. I’d want to do it so bad.“
Michael added: “I guess a question would be, would you continue the story around Mia and those characters, or do you go to another part of the world? That’s a debate.” But it doesn’t sound like it would be too much of a debate, because Danny would find either option exciting to work on.
It’s not too surprising to hear that the Philippou brothers would be interested in working on a Talk to Me sequel, because while working on the first movie they put together a “thick Bible” of the concept’s mythology.
Talk to Me has the following synopsis: When a group of friends discover how to conjure spirits using an embalmed hand, they become hooked on the new thrill, until one of them goes too far and unleashes terrifying supernatural forces.
Sophia Wilde (You Don’t Know Me), Miranda Otto (Annabelle: Creation), Alexandra Jensen (Frayed), Joe Bird (First Day), Otis Djanji (Aquaman), and Zoe Terakes (Wentworth) star.
While it remains to be seen whether or not Talk to Me will be getting a sequel, the Philippou brothers have signed on to make a new film adaptation of the Street Fighter video game franchise.
