Saw X director Kevin Greutert thinks that there will probably be another sequel, particularly if this one is successful.

Saw X, sequel

Jigsaw finally returns in Saw X and like any good sequel, the movie probably won’t be the last installment of the long-running franchise.

While speaking with SFX Magazine (via GamesRadar), Saw X director Kevin Greutert discussed the future of the franchise. “There’s no obvious new direction to go after this film,” he said. “But I think there probably will be more Saw movies, particularly if this one’s successful.

As Saw X takes place between the events of the first two movies, it likely won’t be planting any seeds for a future sequel as Greutert said that it will be building “more on what’s in the past.” The director added, “I truly believe that this is the most standalone Saw film since the first one. It’s not about knowing or remembering anything about the previous films. It’s a richer experience if you know about Saw because otherwise you won’t necessarily know who Amanda is when she appears, but it’s very clear from the beginning what’s happening.

The last few films in the franchise were seriously light on John Kramer/Jigsaw, but Greutert has said that Saw X will feature more of Tobin Bell’s Jigsaw than in any other film in the franchise. “Kramer is the centre of the story,” Greutert said. “They tried to make the last Saw without Tobin, and to me, that was a pretty gutsy move.

As the trailer revealed, Saw X will be set between the events of the first two movies. “John Kramer (Tobin Bell) is back. The most chilling installment of the SAW franchise yet explores the untold chapter of Jigsaw’s most personal game,” reads the official synopsis. “Set between the events of SAW I and II, a sick and desperate John travels to Mexico for a risky and experimental medical procedure in hopes of a miracle cure for his cancer – only to discover the entire operation is a scam to defraud the most vulnerable. Armed with a newfound purpose, John returns to his work, turning the tables on the con artists in his signature visceral way through a series of ingenious and terrifying traps.

Saw X will hit theaters on September 29th.
