Saved by the Bell, canceled, Peacock

The doors of Bayside High are closing once again. Deadline has reported that Peacock has canceled Saved by the Bell after two seasons.

Saved by the Bell was a revival of the iconic ’90s series of the same name. When Zack Morris (Mark-Paul Gosselaar), who is now the Governor of California, experiences controversy for closing too many low-income high schools, he sends the lower-income students to the highest-performing schools in the state. The series follows a new group of students at Bayside High from both overprivileged and working-class families. In a statement to Deadline, a Peacock spokeswoman said:

We are so proud to have been the home of the next iteration of Saved by the Bell for both new and OG fans. Saved by the Bell has been a cultural mainstay for more than 30 years and the new series, led by Tracey Wigfield’s superfan enthusiasm and signature witty humor, seamlessly continued the show’s legacy, all while allowing more audiences to feel seen.  We’re grateful to Tracey, Franco Bario, our partners at UTV, the beloved cast, and the fans who have continued to champion one of the most iconic shows of all time.

Saved by the Bell starred Belmont Cameli, Dexter Darden, Mitchell Hoog, Alycia Pascual-Peña, Josie Totah, Haskiri Velazquez, and John Michael Higgins. In addition to Mark-Paul Gosselaar, the Saved by the Bell revival included appearances from the other original stars, including Elizabeth Berkley Lauren as Jessie Spano, Mario Lopez as A.C. Slater, Tiffani Thiessen as Kelly Morris, and Lark Voorhies as Lisa Turtle. There were plans for Dustin Diamond to reprise his role as Screech in the second season, but Diamond sadly died before that could happen.

My familiarity with Saved by the Bell comes almost entirely from the Zack Morris is Trash Funny or Die series, so I’m not the best person to comment on the revival. Still, from what I understand, it received very positive reviews and even took home the Outstanding Comedy Series award at the GLAAD Media Awards last month. How do you feel about Saved by the Bell getting canceled?
