Morbius, friday, debut, box office, jared leto, marvel, sony pictures

Considering some of the negative buzz Morbius seems to be getting, it’s not doing all that bad on its box office journey. The Friday numbers are coming in from Deadline and it’s performing within expectations but it does appear it won’t be exceeding them.

Morbius grossed $17.2 million on Friday and that looks like it’s coming in at $40.8 million for the weekend. I predicted $45 million for the weekend so we will have to see how Saturday business goes to see if that is still a possibility. Sony Pictures kept Morbius cheap at $75 million so it won’t be difficult for them to make a return on their investment. That was a smart decision considering that Morbius isn’t really receiving goodwill from critics or even moviegoers.

The bad news is that the film is 17% rotten on Rotten Tomatoes and the opening night CinemaScore from moviegoers was a dismal “C+.” The fact that a $40 million+ opening is still possible with these results is a blessing for the film. With exit polling like this, I suspect the movie will crater in the weeks ahead but at least this weekend it can celebrate a number one finish.

What are YOUR thoughts on Morbius’ Friday numbers?
