Minx, cancelled, season 2, HBO Max

HBO Max has cancelled Minx, despite renewing the series for a second season earlier this year. But that’s not the strange part. Production on Minx season 2 was nearly complete, with the cast in their last week of shooting. It’s said that this is merely one of the latest cost-cutting moves taken by Warner Bros. Discovery, who have been axing shows and movies since David Zaslav took over.

Set in 1970s Los Angeles, Minx stars Ophelia Lovibond as Joyce, an “earnest young feminist who joins forces with low-rent publisher (Jake Johnson) to create the first erotic magazine for women.” The first season of Minx will be removed from HBO Max, but production on the second season will continue as producer Lionsgate Television plans on finding another home for the series. “We have enjoyed a good partnership with HBO Max and are working closely to find a new opportunity for ‘Minx,’ so current, and new viewers, can continue this journey with us,” Lionsgate Television said in a statement.

In addition to Ophelia Lovibond and Jake Johnson, Minx also stars Idara Victor, Jessica Lowe, Lennon Parham, Michael Angarano, and Oscar Montoya. The first season stands at 97% critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, although its audience score is much lower. The cast and crew of Minx have been told of the cancellation as they complete their work on the second season. Creator Ellen Rapoport took to Twitter to voice her disappointment of the news but also express her optimism that the series will find a new home. “I am obviously disappointed that Minx (along with several other shows yet to be announced) is leaving HBO Max,” Rapoport said. “I’m proud of the show we’ve made and am confident that the audience will come with us to our new home. Thank you to the best cast and crew in the business.

With the second season nearly in the can, I would hope that Minx will survive being cancelled, if only so its fans can see the next part of the story.
