Sony’s web-centric corner of the Marvel filmscape continues apace with Kraven The Hunter. Based on another long-standing member of Spider-Man’s rogue gallery, actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson is slipping into the role of the mad hunter.

New photos from the film’s UK production have revealed that while Johson may be mentally encapsulating the role of Kraven, he will not be donning the character’s traditional animal-like costume. In fact, the only reason why these photos could be identified as Kraven is due to the character’s signature necklace, a single tooth wrapped around the actor’s neck, and the “barefoot” shoots he is donning.

While this is a major shakeup for the character, it’s not surprising considering what Sony has served up before. Tom Hardy’s Venom was a major departure from the character’s strengths as Spider-Man’s shadow, going so far as to excise the webhead from his origins. Meanwhile, the recently released Mobius didn’t require Jared Leto to dress in anything but a few fancy suits, a far cry from the white-skinned daywalker that Marvel fans know all too well.

Kraven the Hunter is set for release sometime next year, and it’s only then that Marvel fans will get all the details about this anti-hero version of the Russian noble. It’s also likely that they’ll see Kraven join up with at least one past Spidey villain as Sony continues apace towards a Sinister Six film where they’ll presumably run head to head with Tom Holland’s Peter Parker.
