The search for Julian Sands in the Mount Baldy area continues six months after the disappearance of the Warlock actor.

Julian Sands, search, Warlock

It was announced six months ago that Julian Sands, the actor best known for The Killing Fields, A Room with a View, Warlock, Leaving Las Vegas, and more, had gone missing while hiking up Mount Baldy in Southern California. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department announced today that their search efforts for Julian Sands have continued, but they have not yet located the actor.

Saturday’s search included over 80 Search and Rescue volunteers, deputies, and staff,” reads a statement from the Sheriff’s Department. “Their efforts were supported by two helicopters, and drone crews. Aviation resources inserted search teams into remote areas across Mount Baldy and conducted aerial search and assessments efforts. Additionally, drone crews searched areas inaccessible to ground crews.” Since Julian Sands went missing in January, the Sheriff’s Department has conducted eight searches (both ground and air) specifically to locate the actor. Volunteer searchers have logged more than 500 hours in their search. Additionally, eight unrelated search and rescue operations have been conducted in the Mount Baldy area.

Despite the recent warmer weather, portions of the mountain remain inaccessible due to extreme alpine conditions,” the Sheriff’s Department continued. “Multiple areas include steep terrain and ravines, which still have 10 plus feet of ice and snow.” The Sheriff’s Department stated that the missing persons case remains active and the search for Julians Sands will continue in a limited capacity. Sands was an experienced hiker, but the Mount Baldy area experienced some extreme weather conditions over the winter that would have been dangerous for anyone.

Adverse weather bought the search to a halt back in February and the authorities admitted at the time that “the outcome may not be what we would like,” but that “Our goal is to bring closure to the family of Mr. Sands.” I certainly hope so.
