Deadpool 3, Wolverine

Ryan Reynolds has been trying to get Hugh Jackman to return as Wolverine in a Deadpool movie for quite some time, but as Jackman retired from the role following Logan, it seemed the opportunity has passed. Well, break out your white pants because Ryan Reynolds announced today that Hugh Jackman will be returning as Wolverine for Deadpool 3!

Ryan Reynolds begins the video by saying they were sad to have missed the recent D23 Expo, but they’ve been working on Deadpool 3 for a good long while now. “I’ve had to really search my soul on this one,” Reynolds said. “His first appearance in the MCU obviously needs to feel special. We need to stay true to the character. Find new depth and motivation, new meaning. Every Deadpool needs to stand out and stand apart. It’s been an incredible challenge that has forced me to reach down deep inside… and I… have nothing.” The actor mentioned that they did have one idea, and on cue, Hugh Jackman walks through the background of the shot as Reynolds asks, “Hey Hugh, you want to play Wolverine one more time?” The actor’s response: “Yeah, sure, Ryan.

Deadpool 3 will be directed by Shawn Levy from a script by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. While speaking with our own Alex Maidy earlier this year, Rhett Reese teased that “The MCU is an amazing sandbox to play in. We’ll throw lots of cliches as well because we’re giving it 110% man or taking it one day at a time. It’s the Bull Durham thing. Like we’re taking it one day at a time. We can’t divulge details but suffice it to say that when Ryan and Paul and I are on Zoom together, we are cackling. So, it’s pretty fun.” Although it once seemed unlikely that Hugh Jackman would ever reprise the role of Wolverine, Ryan Reynolds has obviously kept pestering his old pal until he agreed to return for Deadpool 3.

The announcement video also revealed that Deadpool 3 will hit theaters on September 6, 2024, a little less than two years from now. I can’t wait. Are you excited to see Hugh Jackman return as Wolverine for Deadpool 3?
