Henry Cavill, Superman, Comic-Con

It’s been nearly ten years since Henry Cavill first played Superman in 2013’s Man of Steel. The actor reprised the role in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Justice League, and Zack Snyder’s Justice League, but audiences are still hungry for more. According to Deadline, we might just be getting some Superman news at San Diego Comic-Con as Henry Cavill is rumoured to be appearing.

Deadline laid out what fans can expect from Comic-Con in a new report. While Black Adam and Shazam: Fury of the Gods are expected to be the main focus of the Warner Bros. panel, they teased that there’s “buzz that Henry Cavill will put in a surprise appearance to talk up more Superman.” Probably best to take all of this with a grain of salt for now, but we’ll know more this weekend. Not counting Zack Snyder’s Justice League, Henry Cavill’s last appearance as the hero was five years ago. There have been conflicting rumours about his status in the DCEU since then, with some saying that Warner Bros. would be recasting the role and others saying that the actor has been negotiating a return. Henry Cavill would still love to return as Superman, previously saying that “there is still a lot of storytelling for me to do as Superman, and I would absolutely love the opportunity” to play the character again.

Warner Bros. does have a new Superman movie in development. It was announced last year that Ta-Nehisi Coates would be penning a new Superman movie that would be produced by J.J. Abrams. “To be invited into the DC Extended Universe by Warner Bros., DC Films and Bad Robot is an honor,” said Coates. “I look forward to meaningfully adding to the legacy of America’s most iconic mythic hero.” Abrams added, “There is a new, powerful, and moving Superman story yet to be told. We couldn’t be more thrilled to be working with the brilliant Mr. Coates to help bring that story to the big screen, and we’re beyond thankful to the team at Warner Bros. for the opportunity.” Warner Bros. and DC are also committed to hiring a Black actor to play the Man of Steel and signing a Black director to helm the movie.

If Henry Cavill does show up at San Diego Comic-Con, what type of Superman announcement do you hope he makes?
