With two month months until release, those behind The Texas Chain Saw Massacre game are urging fans to enjoy what they’ll get.
Gun Interactive’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre video game hasn’t even been released yet and already people are begging for fan-favorite sequel characters to be added. But they shouldn’t expect to be able to download Lefty, Chop Top or any other classic additions in the near future.
Wes Keltner, who serves as Gun Interactive’s CEO and president, took to Twitter to tell potential players of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre game that they shouldn’t get their hopes up for the appearance of a single sequel character or location anytime soon. “Friendly reminder. We have the interactive rights to the 1974 film. We can’t put characters or locations in from other TX films because we don’t have those rights. Demanding we add them is not how Hollywood works. Licensing in general is usually a total mess.” Still, he offered a glimpse of hope, writing, “For clarity. I’m not saying it isn’t possible. I’m saying that we’re focused on the first film. That’s what we have the rights for, however in the future we can pursue the other films. Nothing is guaranteed. But the higher the hype, the more likely “Hollywood” picks up the phone.” So in the meantime, it looks like fans will just have to be happy with original characters Leatherface (Kane Hodder), The Cook and the Hitchhiker (which Edwin Neal is reprising).
It could be worse, of course, as was the case with the 1983 Texas Chain Saw Massacre game for Atari 2600, in which players controlled Leatherface, who went after victims with something that sorta-kinda, maybe if you squint and put another person’s face over your own, looked like a chainsaw. (Wizard Video released a video game adaptation of Halloween the same year; that, too, sucked.)
Gun Interactive (as Gun Media) really made a name in the game with 2017’s Friday the 13th, an asymmetrical multiplayer survival game which let players take on the role of Jason Voorhees or a Camp Crystal Lake counselor. Notably, that game did have sequel players like Tommy Jarvis and Roy Burns aka the fake Jason from Part V. Knowing that might make the exclusion of some favorite franchise characters from The Texas Chain Saw game even tougher for some to swallow.
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre video game underwent technical tests last month and will be released on Playstation 5, XBox Series X and S, and more on August 18th, which is the date in which the original film is set.
