It’s been over two years since it was first announced that Amazon Studios and STXfilms were developing a sequel to My Spy, the action-comedy starring Dave Bautista and Chloe Coleman, but it finally appears to be moving forward. It’s been reported that Dave Bautista and Chloe Coleman have signed on to return for My Spy 2, along with several other familiar faces and a few new additions.

In addition to Dave Bautista and Chloe Coleman, My Spy 2 will also feature the return of Kristen Schaal and Ken Jeong, with Anna Faris, Craig Robinson, and Flula Borg joining up as well. The first film told the story of JJ (Bautista), a hardened CIA operative who found himself at the mercy of precocious nine-year-old Sophie (Coleman) after being sent undercover to surveil her family. The sequel will follow a now teenage Sophie as she “convinces JJ to chaperone her school choir trip to Italy where they both unwittingly end up pawns in an international terrorist plot targeting CIA Chief, David Kim and his son, Collin — who also happens to be Sophie’s best friend.

Peter Segal will return to helm the My Spy sequel, and he also penned the most recent pass on the script, which was written by Erich & Jon Hoeber. “We were so delighted with the success of My Spy. It is an absolute privilege to reunite with Pete Segal, Dave Bautista, Chloe Coleman, and the rest of the talented cast and filmmakers–along with some very exciting additions,” said Amazon and MGM Studios head Jennifer Salke. “With the sequel, our Prime Video customers are in store for another dynamic story, complete with twists, hilarious performances, and even a little romance.” Segal added, “I’m incredibly excited to have our team reassemble for the next chapter of our story. Having Anna, Craig, and Flula join our amazing cast is like a kiss from the comedy Gods.” Production will kick off later this month, with the sequel expected to be available to stream on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.

The first film was a surprise hit as it became the third most-watched movie on SVOD of 2020 after Hamilton and Borat Subsequent Moviefilm. You can check out a review of My Spy from our own JimmyO right here.
