MGM is developing a spin-off of the Creed films based on Ivan Drago’s character, according to a recent report from Variety.

The film, simply titled Drago as of now, will be written by Robert Lawton. He was given the job after impressing MGM following his spec script Becoming Rocky, a script that focused on the making of the original Rocky film. Becoming Rocky never ended up being made, but MGM did bring Lawton into the Rocky world to write Drago.

“I’m incredibly humbled and grateful for this opportunity, and I’m approaching it as an enormous fan of the Rocky franchise, who happens to be a screenwriter,” Lawton said in a statement to Variety.

While it’s unclear exactly what Drago will be about, it’s presumed to feature the son of the iconic Ivan Drago (played by Dolph Lundgren in Rocky IV), Viktor Drago, who appeared in the 2018 film Creed II. In Creed II, Drago steps into the ring to take on Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan), the son of Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers), in a fight that ends in a bloody finale that sees Creed winning after Ivan Drago throws in the towel for his son.

Despite the name and likely setting of the film, it’s unknown if either Lundgren or Florian Munteanu, who played Viktor Drago in Creed II, will return to their roles as the Dragos. Currently, Munteanu is set to return as Viktor in the upcoming Creed III, although his role in the film is also currently unknown.
