Children of the Corn remake: a trailer has been unveiled for director Kurt Wimmer’s take on the Stephen King story

Nearly three years have gone by since we first heard that Equilibrium writer/director Kurt Wimmer was at the helm of a new adaptation of the Stephen King short story Children of the Corn – and the project (which was filmed in Australia) was one of the few productions that didn’t have to shut down during the first wave of pandemic lockdowns back in early 2020. In October of 2020, the movie was given a theatrical release… in just two theatres in Sarasota, Florida. But now we finally know when those of us who didn’t see the movie in Sarasota are going to have the chance to watch it. Wimmer’s Children of the Corn has been acquired by Shudder and RLJE Films and will be getting an 18 day theatrical release beginning on March 3rd. A digital and VOD release will follow on March 21st.

We’ve previously heard that the Children of the Corn remake will show the events leading up to, and including, the massacre of the adults of a small town in Nebraska by their children, after the adults’ irresponsibility ruins the crop and the children’s future. Now we have a fresh synopsis that provides a bit more information: Possessed by a spirit in a dying cornfield, a twelve-year-old girl in Nebraska recruits the other children in her small town to go on a bloody rampage and kill all the adults and anyone else who opposes her. A bright high schooler who won’t go along with the plan is the town’s only hope of survival.

The film stars Elena Kampouris, Kate Moyer, Callan Mulvey, and Bruce Spence.

This Children of the Corn remake was produced by Lucas Foster, Doug Barry, John Baldecchi, and Pam Collis. Executive producers are Wimmer, Mathieu Bonzon, Pascal Borno, John Fragomeni, Brian LaRoda, Keri Nakamoto, Andre Gaines, Sean Harner, and Donald P. Borchers – who produced the 1984 version of Children of the Corn and directed the 2009 remake.

Yes, this is the second time we’ve gotten a Children of the Corn remake. Other entries in the franchise include Children of the Corn II: The Final Sacrifice, Children of the Corn III: Urban Harvest, Children of the Corn: The Gathering, Children of the Corn V: Fields of Terror, Children of the Corn 666: Isaac’s Return, Children of the Corn: Revelation, Children of the Corn: Genesis, and Children of the Corn: Runaway.

I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for the Children of the Corn franchise. I have enjoyed most of these movies, through all of the their ups and downs. So I’m looking forward to checking out this new installment.
