Brendan Fraser, who refused to appear at the Golden Globe ceremony, has called the trophy itself nothing more than a hood ornament.
Brendan Fraser may have lost out on a Golden Globe for his much-praised performance in The Whale, but it hasn’t bothered him at all. After all, he has said the trophy itself would be no more valuable or decorative than a hood ornament to him.
In a recent interview on The Howard Stern Show (or, really, podcast at this point…), Brendan Fraser actively spoke out against the Golden Globes, which he did not attend. On his first Golden Globe nomination, Fraser wondered if there was an ulterior motive from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, who the actor has a controversial past with (detailed below). “I found myself wondering, is this a cynical nomination? I couldn’t really tell because of my history with them and that I still have yet to see the results from their reformation. We all are still awaiting that, to tell you the truth…Get it or don’t get it, doesn’t matter.”
Brendan Fraser continued, elaborating on why a Golden Globe win would mean zero. “What does matter is that it would mean nothing to me. I don’t want it. I didn’t ask to be considered even, that was presumed. I know that would displease many people for lots of reasons, but…They needed me, I didn’t need them. Because it wouldn’t be meaningful to me. Where am I gonna put that hood ornament? What would I do with that?”
In 2018, Brendan Fraser called out Philip Berk, then-president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, for allegedly groping him back in 2003 during a Golden Globe luncheon. After an investigation, the HFPA determined, “Although it was concluded that Mr. Berk inappropriately touched Mr. Fraser, the evidence supports that it was intended to be taken as a joke and not as a sexual advance.” Fraser said he never received the official report from the HFPA, remarking, “So whatever’s in it they don’t want me to read it. Instead I was given a press release that said it was a joke.”
The Golden Globe for Best Actor (Drama) ended up going to Austin Butler for Elvis, with some speculating that Brendan Fraser not attending may have had a play in his loss. However, Fraser is very much in contention for the Academy Award, although Butler and Colin Farrell (The Banshees of Inisherin) will be his biggest competitors.
