Armie Hammer gave his first interview following 2021 sexual abuse and cannibalism allegations, detailing his own abuse and suicide attempt.
Armie Hammer is finally speaking out, more than two years after allegations of sexual abuse and cannibalistic behavior came to light.
In a new interview, Armie Hammer pinpointed just how his sexual tendencies came to be, saying his curiosity and penchant for BDSM came from allegedly being sexually abused by a pastor when he was a teen. “What that did for me was it introduced sexuality into my life in a way that it was completely out of my control. I was powerless in the situation. I had no agency in the situation. Sexuality was introduced to me in a scary way where I had no control. My interests then went to: I want to have control in the situation, sexually.”
Armie Hammer also detailed a 2021 suicide attempt not long after the allegations against him came out, saying, “I just walked out into the ocean and swam out as far as I could and hoped that either I drowned, or was hit by a boat, or eaten by a shark. Then I realized that my kids were still on shore, and that I couldn’t do that to my kids.”
After the allegations of sexual abuse, rape and cannibalism emerged, Armie Hammer faced a quick succession of career-changing events, including being dropped by his agency and publicist, as well as being booted from (or stepping down from, depending on the source) various projects, including the miniseries The Offer, Taika Waititi’s sports comedy Next Goal Wins, the rom-com Shotgun Wedding, and Cold War thriller Billion Dollar Spy. Hammer’s only major feature since the beginning of his downfall was Death on the Nile.
Despite the serious ruptures in his career, Armie Hammer is trying to remain hopeful. “I’m here to own my mistakes, take accountability for the fact that I was an asshole, that I was selfish, that I used people to make me feel better, and when I was done, moved on…I’m now a healthier, happier, more balanced person.”
