If you came of age in the 1990s, chances are you remember plenty of the movies that were released during that period. Of course, that doesn’t mean that all of those movies were good. The decade had its fair share of clunkers, but don’t worry, we’re not talking about those films here. Rather, it’s time to wax nostalgic about the movies of the ‘90s that were actually really good.
Back in the ‘90s, a majority of movies were still shot on film, resulting in that warm, grainy look. The fashion was also totally different than how we dress today — the looks in Clueless and 10 Things I Hate About You capture the essence of the decade. The mid-’90s brought the first-ever entirely computer-animated feature in the form of Disney Pixar’s Toy Story, and while some of the visuals might look a bit rudimentary compared to a modern Pixar flick such as Turning Red, they still hold up pretty well.
This decade was also ripe with cult classics — movies that have developed a devoted fan base that only seems to grow with time. Whether it’s the coming-of-age comedy The Sandlot or David Fincher’s controversial Fight Club, the ’90s produced quite a few beloved films that are referenced often today. It’s kind of strange to imagine a time when the highest-grossing movies being released weren’t superhero flicks, but that really was the case.
