As the new DC Universe starts to take shape under the direction of James Gunn and Peter Safran, not every project in development before the big regime change will see the light of day. Unfortunately, that seems to include Wonder Woman 3. THR has reported that the Patty Jenkins sequel is no longer moving forward and “is considered dead in its current incarnation.“
THR’s report states that Patty Jenkins and Geoff Johns recently submitted their treatment for Wonder Woman 3, but that James Gunn, Peter Safran, and Warner Bros. Pictures co-chairs and co-CEOS Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy had to tell Jenkins that it didn’t “fit in with the new (but still unfolding) plans” for the new DC Universe. We’re still a couple of months out from Gunn and Safran unveiling their plan for the next eight-to-ten-years of the DC Universe, but it’s got to be difficult considering that there are still several major DC movies on the slate.
Nothing has been set in stone yet, but one possible scenario would have the DCU starting from scratch and bringing an end to the comic-book franchise that began with Man of Steel. This would mean that Henry Cavill’s return as Superman would be extremely short-lived. The actor announced his return following a cameo in Black Adam and it was reported that Warner Bros. were in the very early stages of developing a new Man of Steel movie, but that was before Gunn and Safran started planning their fresh approach. Cavill is also expected to make a cameo in The Flash, but sources told THR that there’s “a debate inside the studio as whether or not to keep the cameo and if its inclusion promises something that studio would have no plans on delivering.” It’s also looking unlikely that Black Adam will receive a sequel after its underwhelming box office performance.
