New report states James Gunn will introduce members of supergroup The Authority in the upcoming Superman: Legacy movie.

Superman: Legacy, The Authority

The first chapter of the new DC Universe will officially get underway with Superman: Legacy, but the movie may also introduce a few other upcoming DCU characters. In THR’s Heat Vision newsletter, the upcoming Superman: Legacy screen tests were mentioned, but there was an additional tidbit which stated that members of The Authority will also be appearing in the movie.

The THR report states that “roles such as Lex Luthor and members of supergroup The Authority, which are to be introduced in the movie, will be cast after.” Created by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch, The Authority are a group of heroes who take matters into their own hands to do what they believe is right. The original team consisted of Jenny Sparks, Jack Hawksmoor, Swift, Apollo, Midnighter, The Doctor, and The Engineer. It’s too early to say which members of the team might show up in Superman: Legacy — or if it will even happen — but it will be intriguing to see the universe start to flesh out at this early stage.

The Authority is one of several movies which will populate the first chapter of the DCU alongside Superman: Legacy, The Brave and the Bold, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and Swamp Thing. There will also be several TV shows, including Creature Commandos, Waller, Booster Gold, Lanterns, and Paradise Lost.

James Gunn will write and direct Superman: Legacy, and he has promised that the tone of the movie will be different from the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. Co-chair of DC Studios Peter Safran has also teased that Superman: Legacy will not be an origin story and will focus on “Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. Superman represents truth, justice and the American way. He is kindness in a world that thinks of kindness as old fashioned.” While fans were obviously disappointed when Henry Cavill was dismissed from the role so soon after his brief return in Black Adam, I am excited for someone new to take on the character and to see what James Gunn can do with the Man of Steel. Superman: Legacy will hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
