Although Elizabeth Olsen has spoken about potentially returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the actress recently said that she also needs other characters besides Scarlet Witch.

What did Elizabeth Olsen say about her future in the MCU?

Speaking to London’s The Times in an interview conducted before the start of the SAG-AFTRA strike, Olsen reflected on her time playing Scarlet Witch/Wanda Maximoff, as well as her role in the HBO miniseries Love and Death.

Olsen said that prior to the HBO series, her entire output for years had been Marvel, and that’s something she’s trying to steer clear of.

“I’m trying to figure out… Because, specifically in the last four years, my output has been Marvel,” Olsen said. “I don’t want… it’s not that I don’t want to be associated as just this character. But I really feel like I need to be building other parts back up for balance. I so much want to do films right now. And I hope some of them come together in the way I feel like they can. But yeah, that’s something that I need. I just need other characters in my life. There’s no longevity in one character.”

Olsen’s comments echo that of statements she made earlier this year. In an interview with Variety in April, Olsen said that she hopes to return to the MCU at some point, but that she had also been working on Marvel films for a few years straight and that the break she’s taken has been good to her.

“And do I miss it? I don’t miss it,” Olsen said. “I just did two years straight of it. I think the break’s been good for me. I need to build other characters. It’s important for me. I’m grateful for this show [Love & Death] because it came at a great time — after playing Wanda for two years straight, and then I had to talk about it for another year. So it’s nice having something else to focus on and highlight.”

Up next for Olsen will be a role in the 2023 film His Three Daughters.
