Speaking in a video Q&A session about the upcoming series, director Tomohisa Taguchi and producer Yoshihiro Tominaga were asked about where the team was in terms of production. Tominaga was quick to joke that they were behind schedule, but for good reason.

“To quote a famous animation director … of course, we’re falling behind schedule (laughs)” said Tominaga. “Jokes aside, we’re behind due to our efforts to up the quality of the show. But it will be finished, so I hope everyone can sit tight a bit longer. Don’t worry, Director Taguchi will take care of the rest … This tends to happen — everyone involved wants to create a good show, so, I believe the schedule is being pushed out for a good reason.”

Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War is set to release in October 2022, and comes from studio Pierrot and director Tomohisa Taguchi. Bleach anime character designer Masashi Kudo returns for work on this new series as well. In conjunction with the announcement, Viz Media announced that it had secured worldwide rights (excluding Asia) to the upcoming series.

While Bleach‘s anime became one of the most popular of all time during its run and right up to its end in 2014, it never did catch up to the serialization of the manga, which ended in 2016. Following the manga’s end with the Thousand-Year Blood War, fans were left having to hope that an anime series would come at some point, but now they can be happy knowing it’ll be here soon.
