Marvel fans have visited the Multiverse of Madness, and they now look ahead to Thor: Love and Thunder. The next Marvel Cinematic Universe feature film will be Thor’s fourth solo feature, pairing Chris Hemsworth with a returning Natalie Portman as a powered-up Jane Foster wielding her own Asgardian powers. In a new screenshot from the film released today, Thor hefts Stormbreaker, his weapon of choice since Avengers: Infinity War.

Alongside the screenshot, Entertainment Weekly chatted it up with Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi to talk about the film’s direction. Above all else, Waititi didn’t want to repeat himself as he returned to Marvel’s mightiest hero. “I needed to do something more interesting for myself to keep the whole thing ignited and to make sure that I’m feeling creatively stimulated. I thought, What’s the least expected thing with this franchise?”

Thor’s lost love suddenly becoming a peer in the superhero community is certainly a direction, and it will be one that profoundly affects Thor’s trajectory as a character. Waititi describes the whole thing as a “midlife crisis film” that deals with more serious subject matter than his Thor: Ragnorok while also remaining as fun as Marvel fans expect.

Thor: Love and Thunder flies into theaters on July 8. In addition to the two gods, the film stars Christian Bale as Gorr the God Butcher, a long-standing Thor comics foe hitting the MCU for the first time. The film will also introduce Marvel’s Grecian pantheon, with Russell Crowe playing Marvel’s iteration of Zeus.
