The Way of Water trailer teases a trip back to Pandora

If you happened to be one of the many people who caught Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in theatres this weekend, you saw the first teaser trailer for James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water. Boasting amazing 3D visuals and using a high frame rate, theatrically, the trailer is a wonder to behold. Still, given the limitations of watching something at home, at CinemaCon, it was announced that the trailer would be exclusive to theatres for a while. Alas, online leaks and piracy likely meant that the studio had to release it officially much earlier than anticipated, so here it is – the first trailer for Avatar: The Way of Water!

As you can see in the trailer, Cameron’s set much of the film underwater, and indeed the footage is breathtaking in a way you won’t likely be able to appreciate unless you see it theatrically. While many have questioned whether or not Cameron’s planned series of Avatar sequels would be able to recapture the success of the original film, many have been won over by the teaser, which promises a dazzling big-screen experience. Notably, Disney and 20th Century Studios will be giving the first Avatar a wide re-release on September 23rd.

Here’s the sequel’s official synopsis:

Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, “Avatar: The Way of Water” begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure. Directed by James Cameron and produced by Cameron and Jon Landau, the film stars Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Cliff Curtis, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement and Kate Winslet.
