It’s time for a new episode of our video series WTF Really Happened to This Horror Movie?, which is sort of a spin-off from our show WTF Happened to This Horror Movie. WTF Really Happened to This Horror Movie? dives into movies that were based on or “inspired by” true stories, real people, and actual historical events so we can try to separate fact from fiction. The film we’re digging into with the episode embedded above is 2013’s The Sacrament (watch it HERE), which tells a story that was inspired by the real life Jonestown mass suicide in Guyana in 1978. A truly awful event. Find out what The Sacrament drew from reality by checking out the video.
Written and directed by Ti West, The Sacrament has the following synopsis:
Found footage reveals the events surrounding an investigative team’s visit to a remote commune, led by a dangerous fanatic who maintains an iron grip on his followers.
The film stars Joe Swanberg, AJ Bower, Kentucker Audley, Gene Jones, and Amy Seimetz.
Ti West is a genre regular whose other directing credits include The Roost, The House of the Devil, Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever, The Innkeepers, and X.
This episode of WTF Really Happened to This Horror Movie was Written and Narrated by Andrew Hatfield, Edited by Mike Conway, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
The previous episodes of this series focused on Jaws, The Exorcist, and The Town That Dreaded Sundown, and you can watch a couple of them below. To check out the other shows we have on the JoBlo Horror Originals YouTube channel, head over to the channel – and subscribe while you’re there!
