Sex, drugs, and pop superstardom are at the forefront of the new trailer for the HBO drama series The Idol. The explosive footage teases the relationship between Lily-Rose Depp as the aspiring popstar Jocelyn and Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye as cult leader Tedros. The Idol premieres Sunday, June 4, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and Max.

“After a nervous breakdown derailed Jocelyn’s (Lily-Rose Depp) last tour, she’s determined to claim her rightful status as the greatest and sexiest pop star in America,” the official logline reads. “Her passions are reignited by Tedros (Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye), a nightclub impresario with a sordid past. Will her romantic awakening take her to glorious new heights or the deepest and darkest depths of her soul?”

What to Expect in The Idol?

Tesfaye co-created The Idol with Reza Fahim and Euphoria’s Sam Levinson. Alongside Depp and Tesafaye, The Idol’s ensemble includes Suzanna Son, Troye Sivan, Dan Levy, Eli Roth, Rachel Sennott, Jennie Kim, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Moses Sumney, Hari Nef, Mike Dean, Ramsey, and Hank Azaria.

The Idol had its world premiere at the 76th annual Cannes Film Festival on May 22. After screening the first two episodes out-of-competition, The Idol cast and crew received a five-minute standing ovation. However, initial reviews for The Idol have been predominantly negative.

Levinson, Tesfaye, and Fahim will executive produce alongside Kevin Turen, Ashley Levinson, Joe Epstein, Aaron L. Gilbert for BRON, and Sara E. White. Levinson also directed every episode of The Idol. The series is produced in partnership with A24.
