Todd Field, The Devil in the White City, Keanu Reeves

It was just a few days ago when it was revealed that Keanu Reeves had exited Hulu’s series adaptation of The Devil in the White City, and now Variety has reported that director Todd Field has followed the actor out the door.

Todd Field was set to serve as director and executive producer of The Devil in the White City. It’s not clear why Field exited the project, but this now leaves Hulu searching for both a new director and a new star for the series. The Devil in the White City tells the story of Daniel H. Burnham, “a visionary architect who sets out to mark history with the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, and Dr. H. Holmes, America’s first modern serial killer and the man behind the notorious “Murder Castle” that was built in the shadow of the Fair.

Based on Erik Larson’s novel of the same name, The Devil in the White City was originally set up as a feature film with Martin Scorsese directing and Leonardo DiCaprio set to star. However, Hulu announced in 2019 that they would be developing the project as an eight-episode limited series instead. Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio remained on board as executive producers. Sam Shaw serves as writer and showrunner on the project. Shaw will also executive produce alongside Martin Scorsese, Leonardo DiCaprio, Rick Yorn, Jennifer Davisson, Stacey Sher, Lila Byock, and Mark Lafferty. Production won’t get underway until next year, with the series set for a 2024 launch. Of course, the lack of a leading actor and director might set things back a bit.

Todd Field has been receiving rave reviews for Tár, a drama starring Cate Blanchett as Lydia Tár, a world-famous conductor/composer. The film debuted at the Venice International Film Festival and is Field’s first feature-film since Little Children in 2006. Our own Chris Bumbray was a big fan of Tár, calling it “one of the great movies of our era” in his review. Now that both Todd Field and Keanu Reeves are out of The Devil in the White City, who should direct and star in the series?
