According to Variety, Meg Donnelly (Zombies films) and Drake Rodger (Not Alone) has been tapped for the leading roles in The CW’s upcoming Supernatural prequel pilot The Winchesters. Donnelly and Rodger will be playing the young versions of Sam and Dean’s parents Mary and John Winchester, who were respectively portrayed by Samantha Smith and Jeffrey Dean Morgan in the original series.

Their official character descriptions are listed below:

  • Donnelly’s Mary is a 19-year-old girl who has been fighting the forces of darkness since she was a child. After losing someone close to her, the hardened hunter considers quitting the family business — until her father’s disappearance and the arrival of newcomer John forces her to lead a new team.
  • Rodger’s John recently returned from Vietnam. Selfless and clear-headed, he finds a new mission back home, where traces of his father’s past lead him to a secret organization and a whole new war as a hunter.

“Before Sam and Dean, there was John and Mary,” reads the logline. “Told from the perspective of narrator Dean Winchester, The Winchesters is the epic, untold love story of how John met Mary and how they put it all on the line to not only save their love but the entire world.”

The prequel will feature the return of Jensen Ackles as he reprises his role as Dean to serve as the show’s narrator. He alongside actress and wife Danneel Ackles are executive producing through their Chaos Machine banner as part of their overall deal with Warner Bros. Television.

It is written and executive produced by Robbie Thomas, with Glen Winter serving as an executive producer and director. It is produced by Chaos Machine for Warner Bros. Television and CBS Studios.

Supernatural lasted for 15 seasons on The CW which ran from September 15, 2005, through November 19, 2020. It starred Ackles and Jared Padalecki in the respective leading roles of Dean and Sam.
