Jamie Foxx and Tommy Lee Jones star in the first trailer for Prime Video’s latest drama, The Burial.

Prime Video released the first trailer for The Burial, a new inspirational story directed by Maggie Betts. The film sees a down-on-his-luck funeral homeowner enlist help from a charismatic lawyer to sue a major funeral company over a contract dispute.

What is The Burial about?

“Inspired by true events, when a handshake deal goes sour, funeral homeowner Jeremiah O’Keefe (Academy Award winner Tommy Lee Jones) enlists charismatic, smooth-talking attorney Willie E. Gary (Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx) to save his family business,” the official synopsis reads. “Tempers flare and laughter ensues as the unlikely pair bond while exposing corporate corruption and racial injustice in this inspirational, triumphant story.”

Based on a 1999 New Yorker article of the same name by Jonathan Harr, The Burial features a story by Doug Wright (I Am My Own Wife, Quills) who co-wrote the screenplay alongside Betts. Foxx, Celine Rattray, Trudie Styler, Datari Turner, Janette Kahn, Adam Richman, and Bobby Shriver all serve as producers.

The cast also includes Jurnee Smollett (Birds of Prey, Lovecraft Country), Mamoudou Athie (Jurassic World Dominion, Elemental), Pamela Reed (Kindergarten Cop), Bill Camp (The Queen’s Gambit, Joker), and Alan Ruck (Succession, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off). Harrison Ford was originally cast in Jones’ role but dropped out in 2021.

The Burial marks Betts’ third time directing a feature film following 2010’s The Carrier and 2017’s Novitiate, the latter of which starred Margaret Qualley, Melissa Leo, Lisa Stewart, and Alyssa Brindley.

The Burial will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival before it releases in select theaters on October 6, 2023. The movie will then hit Prime Video on October 13, 2023.
