While streaming services take their place in the realm of the movie viewing experience, a new Steven Spielberg film is still an event picture worth going to the cinema for. Today, we have our first look at the trailer for Steven Spielberg’s latest, The Fabelmans, a semi-autobiographical tale that is positioned to be a favorite at the Academy Awards.
“Movies are a dream that you never forget,” The Fabelmans’ trailer opens. From there, we see a young boy named Sammy creating a film clip at home of a toy train crash. Next, Sammy and his family go to the movies to see The Greatest Show on Earth, which has its own spectacular train crash and is often cited as the first film Spielberg ever saw. Various moments depict family struggles and the distinction between passion and hobby, with Judd Hirsch’s character declaring, “Family, art, life–it’ll tear you in two.” There’s also a monkey!
Anticipation for the latest Steven Spielberg film arrived just about at the moment of its announcement and was only built after the poster release just this week. Now, with this wonderful trailer, The Fabelmans will surely be at the top of the must-see movies of 2022 for many.
The Fabelmans received a standing ovation at TIFF. Steven Spielberg addressed the packed audience by reflecting on why he made the movie and how the pandemic inspired him. “As things got worse and worse, I felt that if I was going to leave anything behind, what was the thing that I really need to resolve and unpack about my mom, my dad…This film is, for me, a way of bringing my mom and my dad back.”
Spielberg’s stand-in mom and dad are played by Michelle Williams and Paul Dano, respectively, while Sammy is played by Gabriel LaBelle and Mateo Zoryna Francis-Deford. The supporting cast includes Seth Rogen, Judd Hirsch and Julia Butters.
JoBlo’s Chris Bumbray was lucky enough to catch a screening of The Fabelmans at the Toronto International Film Festival this weekend and had this to say about Spielberg’s latest epic:
Spielberg’s #TheFabelmans is one of his most personal and playful films. Loved it. Judd Hirsch has a 10 minute sequence that earned major applause and there’s a killer cameo only a jerk would ruin.
