The sci-fi thriller Divinity, directed by Eddie Alcazar and produced by Steven Soderbergh, is now showing at Sundance. Check out the trailer!
The sci-fi thriller Divinity, written and directed by Eddie Alcazar (Perfect) and produced by Steven Soderbergh (Ocean’s Eleven), had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival over the weekend – and an ambulance was called to the theatre when one audience member had an unspecified medical incident. (A rumor went around that a woman went into labor during the screening, but that was debunked.) The movie wasn’t interrupted and the individual who suffered the medical incident was treated and cleared, but here’s hoping other screenings of Divinity will go more smoothly. To help you decide whether or not you want to watch Divinity at some point down the line, we have the film’s trailer embedded above.
There are a few different synopses available for Divinity. Here’s one: Set on a barren planet, the retro feature showcases the fight to uncover mysteries behind an immortality-granting drug that has wreaked havoc on society.
Here’s another: Centers on two mysterious brothers, who abduct a mogul during his quest for immortality. Meanwhile, a seductive woman helps them launch a journey of self-discovery.
And here’s the Sundance version: Set in an otherworldly human existence, scientist Sterling Pierce dedicated his life to the quest for immortality, slowly creating the building blocks of a groundbreaking serum named “Divinity.” Jaxxon Pierce, his son, now controls and manufactures his father’s once-benevolent dream. Society on this barren planet has been entirely perverted by the supremacy of the drug, whose true origins are shrouded in mystery. Two mysterious brothers arrive with a plan to abduct the mogul, and with the help of a seductive woman named Nikita, they will be set on a path hurtling toward true immortality.
The Sundance write-up comes with the warning that Divinity contains strobe effects and may potentially trigger seizures.
The film stars Scott Bakula, Stephen Dorff, Moises Arias, Jason Genao, Karrueche Tran, and Bella Thorne.
Alcazar’s Perfect did not work for me (you can read my review HERE), so I can’t say I’m looking forward to seeing his Divinity, even though I’m a fan of Soderbergh’s work.
