Star Trek: Discovery’s upcoming fifth season is set to be its last, with Paramount Plus announcing the show’s official end.
It looks like the Star Trek: Discovery crew’s five-year mission isn’t getting extended, with Paramount + announcing today that the upcoming fifth season of the show will be it’s last. It’s now set to end in early 2024, which means that not one but two of the streamer’s Star Trek shows will be ending within the next twelve months, with Star Trek: Picard currently airing its third and final season.
That said, the Star Trek franchise doesn’t seem like it will be grinding to a halt anytime soon, with Star Trek: Strange New Worlds sliding in as the franchise’s flagship show on Paramount+. It’s earned raves, with many praising it as a return to the classic Trek vibe of the original shows. Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Prodigy are both currently airing on the streamer, with a new show centred around Starfleet Academy in the planning stages.
Notably, Star Trek: Discovery is the only show still airing on Paramount+ that started life when the service was originally called CBS All Access. According to Deadline, production on the fifth season has already wrapped, but with the decision to end the show, additional filming may be done to give it an appropriate end.
In a statement, showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Michelle Paradise said they were honoured to have been part of the series. “The ‘Trek’ universe means so much to so many – including us – and we couldn’t be prouder of everything Discovery has contributed to its legacy, particularly with representation. If just one person sees themselves, or the possibilities for their future, in a new way because of Discovery, then we think we’d have made Gene Roddenberry very proud.”
Kurtzman remains involved with the franchise, serving as an executive producer on all currently running Star Trek series.
