Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk is in the early stages of the development of a satire about the creation of the mega-hit Squid Game, according to a recent report from Deadline.

The project, tentatively titled The Best Show on the Planet, will be a satirical comedy that reflected the overnight success of Squid Game and focus on the director’s own personal experiences of suddenly being thrust into the limelight and becoming a household name.

For Hwang, this would mark the third series he has in development, with the creator also working on a feature film inspired by a novel by Italian essayist Umberto Eco, as well as the highly anticipated second season of Squid Game. According to Deadline, the second Squid Game season is targeted for a Halloween 2024 release.

Originally released in 2021 on Netflix, Squid Game became an instant sensation, almost immediately becoming Netflix’s most-watched series and amassing more than 1.65 billion viewing hours during its first four weeks of launch.

The series also saw massive award wins as well, including lead actor O Yeong-su winning the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor – Series, Miniseries or Television Film and Lee Jung-jae and Jung Ho-yeon winning the Screen Actors Guild Awards for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor and Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series, respectively, with all three becoming the first Korean actors to ever win their respective awards.
