Spin-off Series to Lead Into The Batman 2

More information on the upcoming The Penguin series starring Colin Farrell has been shared, with director Matt Reeves revealing when the series takes place in the world of The Batman.

Speaking to Collider recently, Reeves — who serves as executive producer on the series — not only revealed that the series is set to begin production soon, but noted that the project will likely lead into the upcoming sequel to The Batman.

“There’s actually a whole little fabric of things we’re wanting to do, the way we’re doing with [the] Penguin and how that comes back into how that will lead into the sequel, and what that sequel is going to be,” said Reeves.

Previously, the general timeline for The Penguin had also been revealed, with HBO Max’s Sarah Aubrey had said in a previous interview that the series would take place in between both movies.

“Penguin will sit immediately after the end of The Batman and temporally before the events of the second movie. The show will come out in between the two movies. Now beyond that, it’s fun for the audience to know that it will be a bridge between the two, but the actual release date, I’m not at liberty to say,” Aubrey revealed in November.

“The goal of this is to show what Oz’s life is like, and that’s very much in the streets of Gotham, trying to get up and over as only the Penguin can,” Aubrey stated. “As a hustler and a strategist with his own ambitions. It is a great example of having the time over eight episodes to tell a longer-arc character story with a lot of delicious twists and turns and new characters. It’s very much going to be about Gotham at that street level because he’s not flying around like Batman does. We are all embracing that as a very specific experience for audiences to have.”

The limited drama will be based on the DC characters created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger. It is being written by Lauren LeFranc, who is also set as the showrunner. The first two episodes will be directed by Craig Zobel.
