Sam Raimi Reflects on Infamous Spider-Man 3 Dancing Scene

One of the more iconic scenes found in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3 is the now infamous moment of Tobey Maguire walking out of a store in an all-black suit, before breaking into dance.

In a recent interview with Fandom, Raimi recalled the scene and spoke about his original intention for it.

“Well, we meant it to be funny, actually,” Raimi said when thinking back on the scene, noting that even he knew it was a bit funny to see a traditionally meek character suddenly leaning into no longer acting that way. “It was Peter Parker’s version — this lame kid — of what it must be like to be his evil self. But he’s so whipped. He’s so out of it that that’s his take on it. And that didn’t go over well with the audience. But that’s what we were trying to do. So I’m not surprised that people … I’m glad people find it funny! We wanted it to be fun.”

While the idea behind the scene seemed to be innocent enough, fans still did not like it initially. Thankfully for Raimi and those behind the film, fans have since looked back on the film with a laugh, something that Raimi himself has done, as he noted that it was “hysterical to watch” the many memes that have come out.

Raimi’s latest film is Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which sees the return of Benedict Cumberbatch in his role as Dr. Stephen Strange. This time, the Sorcerer Supreme will join Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff, who finally transformed into the Scarlet Witch during the WandaVision finale.

Additional cast includes MCU alums Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong, and Rachel McAdams, who are reprising their roles as Karl Mordo, Wong, and Dr. Christine Palmer, respectively. It will also feature the live-action debut of Marvel hero America Chavez, who will be portrayed by newcomer Xochitl Gomez (The Baby-Sitters Club).
