Rebekah McKendry directing horror film now filming in Winnipeg

Back in 2017, it was announced that Sean S. Cunningham, producer/director of the original Friday the 13th, was going to be producing a horror movie inspired by the online phenomenon “The Elevator Game”. Cunningham’s project didn’t get off the ground, but last year it was announced that another Elevator Game project was in the works, with Michael Goi (Megan Is Missing) attached to direct. That second project has now started filming in Winnipeg, but Goi is no longer at the helm. Instead, this Elevator Game is being directed by Rebekah McKendry (All the Creatures Were Stirring).

Scripted by Travis Seppala, Elevator Game centers on

socially awkward teenager Ryan, who discovers that the night his sister disappeared she had played ‘The Elevator Game’ — a ritual conducted in an elevator, in which players attempt to travel to another dimension using a set of rules that can be found online. Ignoring warnings, he resolves to follow and find her.

The film stars Gino Anania (Skymed), Alec Carlos (Orphan: First Kill), Megan Best (Séance), Nazariy Demkowicz (Dark Harvest), Verity Marks (Toys of Terror), Liam Stewart-Kanigan (Orphan: First Kill), and newcomers Madison MacIsaac and Samantha Halas.

A collaboration between Fearworks Production, AMP, Buffalo Gal Pictures, Head Gear Films, and Metrol Technology, with the participation of Manitoba Film & Music, Elevator Game is being produced by Ed Elbert and Stefan Brunner for Fearworks, and by James Norrie for AMP. Phil Hunt and Compton Ross of Head Gear Films, Inderpal Singh of AMP, Phyllis Laing of Buffalo Gal Pictures, and Kevin Hicks serve as executive producers.

McKendry didn’t provide a statement about her intentions for Elevator Game, but when Goi was set to direct the movie he said, “What Psycho did for showers, The Elevator Game will do for lifts. I want the audience to be taking the stairs after they see this film.” Hopefully McKendry has the same thing in mind. Or maybe her vision for it is even more unnerving…
