MANILA, Philippines—Coach Tim Cone gave a simple reminder to Ginebra before their game against Converge on Sunday: “Keep chucking.”
The Gin Kings did just that en route to a 120-101 blowout of the FiberXers at PhilSports Arena.
“Before the game, we talked about how important this game was. Coach has this saying right now that goes, ‘just keep on chucking,’” said swingman Jamie Malonzo, who led the way for Ginebra.
“We’ve been having a lot of games going and we want to ‘keep on chucking,’ keep it going and finish the best way possible.”
Malonzo fired a career-high 29 points that went with eight rebounds, five assists and a steal.
It seems like Cone’s challenge also reached the towers of Ginebra as Justin Brownlee and Christian Stanhardinger both finished with double-doubles.
Brownlee ended the game with 28 points and 10 rebounds while Stanhardinger also notched 28 points and 12 rebounds.
Cone continued to urge his wards to keep doing the same thing, especially since they are now in the latter part of the elimination round.
“We’ll just keep chucking, no matter what’s going on, we’ll keep moving along,” Cone said.
Ginebra plays Phoenix next before entering the All-Star break, where Malonzo’s high-flying skills will be showcased in the slam dunk contest.
“I’m more of an in-game dunker but I’ll give the fans what they want, I’ll try my best,” said Malonzo.
