Don't Worry Darling, spitgate

The premiere of Olivia Wilde’s Don’t Worry, Darling at the Venice International Film Festival was largely overshadowed by a handful of controversies, namely, Spitgate.

During the premiere, footage emerged that appeared to show Harry Styles spitting on Chris Pine before taking a seat next to him. Olivia Wilde recently appeared on The Late Show, and host Stephen Colbert asked her outright whether Harry Styles had actually spit on Chris Pine.

No, he did not. But I think it’s a perfect example of, like, people will look for drama anywhere they can. Harry did not spit on Chris,

A representative for Chris Pine also called the whole Spitgate story ridiculous. “[It’s] a complete fabrication and the result of an odd online illusion that is clearly deceiving and allows for foolish speculation…Just to be clear, Harry Styles did not spit on Chris Pine,” the rep said. “There is nothing but respect between these two men and any suggestion otherwise is a blatant attempt to create drama that simply does not exist.

Stephen Colbert also touched upon another rumour surrounding Don’t Worry, Darling regarding a feud between Olivia Wilde and Florence Pugh, who starred in the film. “I have nothing but respect for Florence’s talent,” Wilde said. “She’s fantastic. She’s on the set of her movie Dune right now, and there’s nothing cooler than a busy actress. I have nothing against her for any reason.” Wilde added that very few of her fellow male directors are asked these types of questions. “People would actually be talking about the movie itself,” Wilde said. “They’re praised for being tyrannical. They can be investigated time and time again, it still doesn’t overtake conversations of their actual talent or about the films themselves. This is something we’ve come to expect. It is just very different standards that are created for women and men in the world at large.

Don’t Worry, Darling will hit theaters on September 23rd. You can check out a review of the film from our own JimmyO right here.
