Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, Nicolas Cage, Rotten Tomatoes

We’ve all been anxiously awaiting the release of Nicolas Cage’s The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent over here at JoBlo and with the film recently debuting at the South by Southwest Film Festival, we’re one step closer! The comedy finds Cage playing a fictionalized version of himself who accepts a $1 million offer from a wealthy super fan (Pedro Pascal) to attend a party, only for that super fan to turn out to be a notorious drug lord. The movie is earning Nicolas Cage some of the best reviews of his career as it’s currently sitting at a perfect 100% at Rotten Tomatoes.

Sure, that 100% Rotten Tomatoes score for The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent may just originate from 17 reviews (as I write this) but I can only hope it’s a harbinger of things to come. Not that Rotten Tomatoes scores should be taken as gospel, but I’m pumped people seem to be loving the movie so far. As more reviews pour in after the film’s wide release next month, it’s likely that score will drop. Some of Nicolas Cage’s highest-scoring films on Rotten Tomatoes include Red Rock West (97%), Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (97%), Pig (96%), Moonstruck (94%), Face/Off (92%), Raising Arizona (92%), and Leaving Las Vegas (91%).

When writer/director Tom Gormican first approached Cage about starring in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, the actor recently said that he “turned it down three of four times” until a sincere letter from Gormican ultimately convinced him. “I wanted no part of it,” Cage said. “But when I got Tom’s letter, then I thought, ‘OK, he’s not just trying to mock so-called Nick Cage; there is a real interest in some of the earlier work.’ His tone was more of a celebration of some of [the actor’s iconic onscreen] moments — like being at the bottom of the pool in Leaving Las Vegas or [using] the gold guns in Face/Off.

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent will hit theaters on April 22, 2022.
