Star Trek franchise producer Alex Kurtzman says that announcements about new shows will be coming soon.

Star Trek, new announcements

With Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Picard ending, there’s room for another new series (or two) to join the long-running franchise. While speaking with SFX Magazine (via TrekMovie), Star Trek franchise producer Alex Kurtzman teased that we should hear about those new projects soon.

[We] have plans for new things… there’s quite a few plans, and you’ll hear about them soon,” Alex Kurtzman said. “We will continue to expand the Star Trek universe, absolutely.” One of those potential new shows is the Section 31 series starring Michelle Yeoh. The project was first announced in 2019, but so much time has passed that some believed it had been shelved. Not so, according to Kurtzman. “I can tell you that we’re still very excited about Section 31,” Kurtzman said. “And that’s all I will say.” Yeoh’s Best Actress win at the Academy Awards for Everything Everywhere All at Once is sure to increase the demand on her time, but keep those fingers crossed.

The third season of Picard has received a much better reception than the first two seasons. The reunion of the cast of The Next Generation has proven to be a hit and there’s been talk about carrying the story on in a new series which showrunner Terry Matalas has called Star Trek: Legacy. Alex Kurtzman isn’t ruling anything out at this stage but suggested they could do a limited series revolving around individual characters. “By the way, even individual characters – I think we could absolutely continue to tell stories about individual characters that are set up on the show in other contexts,” Kurtzman said. “That’s the beauty of having a universe now is that, in a perfect world, we’re not just doing seasons of television, we’re doing event series, we’re doing single events that could be two, three hours long. I think that we are now at a place where that’s really possible.

As for when we might hear something more official about the future of Star Trek, First Contact Day (April 5th) is just around the corner. It’s expected that we’ll hear about the official season 3 renewal of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, especially as Akiva Goldsman has said that it’s already started filming.

What type of new Star Trek shows would you like to see?
