Neon has announced the release date for David Cronenberg’s latest slice of sci-fi body horror, Crimes of the Future, which will first have its world premiere at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. The film, which stars Viggo Mortensen, Kristen Stewart, and Léa Seydoux, is set to arrive in select New York and Los Angeles theaters on June 3. This will be followed by a wide theatrical release on June 10.
“Crimes of the Future is a meditation on human evolution. Specifically – the ways in which we have had to take control of the process because we have created such powerful environments that did not exist previously,” Cronenberg said in a statement. “It is an evolution of things I have done before. Fans will see key references to other scenes and moments from my other films. That’s a continuity of my understanding of technology as connected to the human body. Technology is always an extension of the human body, even when it seems to be very mechanical and non-human…”

Set in a not-so-distant future, Crimes of the Future is written and directed by David Cronenberg (The Fly, Maps to the Stars). It stars Viggo Mortensen, Kristen Stewart, Léa Seydoux, Scott Speedman, Welket Bungué, Don McKellar, Lihi Kornowski, Tanaya Beatty, Nadia Litz, Yorgos Karamichos, and Yorgos Pirpassopoulos.
“In the film, as the human species adapts to a synthetic environment, the body undergoes new transformations and mutations,” reads the synopsis. “With his partner Caprice, Saul Tenser, celebrity performance artist, publicly showcases the metamorphosis of his organs in avant-garde performances. Timlin, an investigator from the National Organ Registry, obsessively tracks their movements, which is when a mysterious group is revealed… Their mission – to use Saul’s notoriety to shed light on the next phase of human evolution.”
The film marks Cronenberg and Mortensen’s third collab, after working together on the acclaimed A History of Violence and Eastern Promises. Production took place in Athens, Greece.
