The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers and Big Shot have been cancelled by Disney+ after two seasons on the streaming service.
It’s a bad day to be a sports comedy series on Disney+. It’s been announced that the streaming service has cancelled The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers and Big Shot after just two seasons.
The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers wrapped up its second season last November, with Big Shot concluding in October. With no news about the possible renewal of either series since they aired their second and now final seasons, I suppose this news isn’t entirely unexpected.
The first season of The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers was set in present-day Minnesota and found the Mighty Ducks having evolved from scrappy underdogs to an ultra-competitive, powerhouse youth hockey team. After 12-year-old Evan Morrow (Brady Noon) is unceremoniously cut from the Ducks, he and his mom, Alex (Lauren Graham), set out to build their own team of misfits to challenge the cutthroat, win-at-all-costs culture of youth sports today. With the help of Gordon Bombay (Emilio Estevez), they rediscover the joys of playing just for the love of the game.
Emilio Estevez excited the series after the first season, with initial reports claiming that the actor left due to the show’s COVID policies or to creative differences. Estevez later set the record straight, saying that he had actually contracted COVID-19 in March 2020 and spent the summer and fall suffering from “long haul syndrome.” In the end, he knew he had to take care of his own health over the show. The second season found the team attending an intense summer hockey camp in California run by former NHL player, Colin Cole (Josh Duhamel).
As for Big Shot, the series centers on Marvyn Korn (John Stamos) after he is ousted from his position as head coach for an NCAA basketball team. Korn is given a chance at redemption with a coaching position at Westbrook, an elite private high school for girls, and soon learns that the teenage players require empathy and vulnerability, which are very foreign concepts for the stoic Coach Korn. By learning to connect with his players and his daughter, Marvyn starts to grow into the person he’s always hoped to be. The girls learn to take themselves more seriously, finding their footing both on and off the court.
