Obi-Wan Kenobi series, new Luke Skywalker, Mark Hamill

Mark Hamill is Luke Skywalker. I can’t imagine that there’s a ton of debate about that. After playing the role in the original Star Wars trilogy, Hamill returned for The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and The Rise of Skywalker; he even returned for The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett with his voice and likeness digitally recreated, but digital deaging can only take you so far and we’ll be introduced to a new Luke Skywalker in the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series.

The first trailer for Obi-Wan Kenobi was released last week and one scene found the former Jedi Master (Ewan McGregor) keeping a watchful eye on a young Luke Skywalker, who is now played by Grant Feely. Mark Hamill took to Twitter to welcome Feely to the Star Wars family and wish him the very best.

Grant Feely looks like a perfect Luke Skywalker and I am wishing him all the very best!” Hamill wrote, adding The Force Is With Feely via hashtag. I suppose we’ll have to wait and see just how this new Luke Skywalker factors into the story of Obi-Wan Kenobi, but I can’t wait to find out!

In addition to Ewan McGregor, Obi-Wan Kenobi will also star Rupert Friend as the Grand Inquisitor, Moses Ingram as Reva/the Third Sister, Sung Kang as the Fifth Brother, Joel Edgerton as Owen Lars, and Bonnie Piesse as Beru Lars. Kumail Nanjiani, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Indira Varma, Benny Safdie, Maya Erskine, and Simone Kessel will also appear, but perhaps the biggest draw aside from Ewan McGregor himself is the return of Hayden Christensen as Darth Vader.

The Obi-Wan Kenobi series begins 10 years after the dramatic events of Revenge of the Sith where Obi-Wan Kenobi faced his greatest defeat—the downfall and corruption of his best friend and Jedi apprentice, Anakin Skywalker, who turned to the dark side as evil Sith Lord Darth Vader. “Obi-Wan is lost,” McGregor has teased. “He’s a broken man after what happened with the Jedi order at the end of Episode III, but also what happened with Anakin; that he lost him to the dark side. He feels an enormous amount of responsibility for that, and guilt.” It will debut on Disney+ on May 25, 2022.
