M3GAN 2 will dance into theaters once again as Universal Pictures has slated the sequel for a 2025 release date.

M3GAN 2, release date

Audiences can’t get enough of the murderous, artificial intelligence doll known as M3GAN. The film has proven to be quite the success for Universal Pictures, so it should come as no surprise that the studio has officially slated M3GAN 2.0 for a January 17, 2025 release.

Successful horror movies tend to crank out their sequels in short order, so I’m actually somewhat impressed that Universal is waiting two years between movies. That could be due to a variety of factors, including scheduling, but I’m glad they’re not rushing out the next installment just for the sake of it. Akela Cooper (Malignant), who penned the first movie, is returning to write the script for M3GAN 2.0. Allison Williams and Violent McGraw are set to reprise their roles for the sequel, with Williams also serving as a producer.

After the trailer for M3GAN went viral, Universal Pictures reportedly started discussions about a sequel back in November. Producer James Wan didn’t want to comment on the news of a possible sequel before the first movie had even been released, but he did tease, “I don’t just think of one story; I think of the bigger world. So if we’re fortunate enough to tell any other stories, we can pull from that bigger world.

Gerard Johnstone (Housebound) directed M3GAN, but no word on if he will be returning for the sequel. “M3GAN is a marvel of artificial intelligence, a life-like doll programmed to be a child’s greatest companion and a parent’s greatest ally,” reads the official synopsis. “Designed by brilliant toy-company roboticist Gemma, M3GAN can listen and watch and learn as she becomes friend and teacher, playmate and protector, for the child she is bonded to. When Gemma suddenly becomes the caretaker of her orphaned 8-year-old niece, Cady, Gemma’s unsure and unprepared to be a parent. Under intense pressure at work, Gemma decides to pair her M3GAN prototype with Cady in an attempt to resolve both problems — a decision that will have unimaginable consequences.M3GAN is currently playing int heaters, and you can check out a review of the film from our own Chris Bumbray right here.
