In a recent interview with CNBC, author Paul Tremblay confirmed that M. Night Shyamalan’s upcoming horror thriller Knock at the Cabin will be based on his 2018 novel titled The Cabin at End of the World. For his work on the novel, Tremblay earned his second Bram Stoker Award for Novel and his first Locus Award for Best Horror Novel.

The novel centers around a three-member family whose vacation at a secluded cabin gets horrifyingly interrupted by the forced arrival of strangers who have taken them captive. The strangers tell the family that one of them must be killed by the others in order to stop the impending end of the world.

Even though he wasn’t involved in writing the screenplay, Tremblay revealed that he acted as a consultant to the Oscar-nominated filmmaker by giving him answers to questions he had about the novel.

“Night and I discussed the book and I answered a bunch of his questions about character and story, about why I did what I did,” Tremblay recalled. “I can’t speak to his screenwriting process. I did get to visit the set and watch him and the crew work for two days. I came away impressed with the positive creative atmosphere he engendered.”

The award-winning horror writer also went on to comment about the cast’s commitment to their characters, which he had witnessed during his set visit.

“The actors were fully committed, engaged, and emotionally connected to the story, and embodied the spirit of the characters from what I could see,” Tremblay said. “Between shots, they asked me thoughtful questions about the book, and they were beyond generous with their time and attention. Getting to chat with them was one of my favorite parts of the set visit.

Knock at the Cabin is written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, who most recently helmed Universal’s thriller drama Old, which earned a worldwide gross of over $90 million. The new project is produced by Shyamalan and Ashwin Rajan through their Blinding Edge Pictures banner along with Marc Bienstock, and Steven Schneider.
